All permanent full-time and part-time teachers (0.5 FTE and over) in state and integrated schools can lease a laptop for a three-year period. The Ministry pays up to two-thirds of the cost and teachers or schools cover the remaining third.

The Ministry of Education have negotiated significant reductions on projectors as a result of feedback from teachers in the TELA Laptop scheme and research carried out by Waikato University, indicating that data projectors increase the laptops' effectiveness as a teaching tool.
